So far this year there have been more mass shootings than there have been days. According to the research group the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 39 mass shootings in the first three weeks of 2023. While two recently happened this past week in California, both making mainstream media, most of the incidents have occurred in the south in states such as Louisiana and Florida. This comes after 647 mass shootings in 2022 emerged and another 690 in 2021, according to the Gun Violence Archive group.
Gun Violence Archive
The research group, according to AXIOS, has described a mass shooting “as a situation in which at least four people are shot and either injured or killed, not including the shooter.”
Political Response
Democrats – namely Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom – have called out Republicans and Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Cali. Biden has urged them to pass his assault weapons ban and Newsom has called out McCarthy as he is from California, where the two most recently popularized incidences occurred this week.
Though McCarthy has, in the past, urged his colleagues to vote the bipartisan gun safety bill into law back in June. This was the biggest federal gun legislation in nearly three decades.
McCarthy has come out to respond to the California shootings during a briefing from Capitol Hill Tuesday, in which he gave his condolences to the families of those affected. He also responded to reporter questions about adding more gun safety legislation. He stated, according to AXIOS, that “California has the strictest gun laws there are, and apparently that did not work in this situation.”
What now?
As we begin another year – what are our solutions? As Speaker McCarthy put it, even the state with the strictest gun control laws can have terrible situations with shootings. While guns can be controlled on the surface, terrible people will find a way to do what they want to do. Sadly. And that is the real issue here, though how can we fix that?

Years ago I wrote a letter to the Editor of the Raleigh News and Observer concerning a mass shooting at a McDonalds in California. My comment was that in the same issue of the paper, deep in the first section was a report on a mass killing by a “homeless” nut case that torched a rooming house, with a much larger death toll, by using several gallons of gasoline in the stairwell of the structure.
Of course, all of the “usual suspects” rabidly called for “effective gun legislation” etc. etc. but made no note of the people burned to death by the other nut case. Thanks to the liberals and groups such as the ACLU we now have actual nut cases living on our side walks.
I would dare to say that the total deaths from mass shootings are far less than the total deaths from the illegal fentanyl that is flowing across our wide-open southern border. Let’s blame the reason for those deaths on those who do not want to enforce the immigration laws.
A good start would be to ban “gun free zones.” Next, how about increasing punishment for using illegal guns in the commission of a crime. I believe the “anti-gun crowd” loves a good mass shooting because their ultimate goal is to disarm as many citizens as possible, not save lives.
The problem is HUMAN MENTAL ILLNESS and not an inanimate object, ( gun, knife, baseball bat, pipe, car, etc.). These are all items that need to be operated by a HUMAN and the PROBLEM is TODAYS society of “NOT” getting treatment for MENTAL ILLNESS by shoving it under the proverbial rug and blaming everything but society its self. And since our laziness is coming to cars, SELF DRIVING, will we blame the car in an accident where people are killed or injured, or will we blame the LAZY SOCIETY ???
HUMAN FACTOR IS THE GROUNDS THAT CAN CREATE OR DESTROY, NOT INANIMATE OBJECTS WHICH DO NOT HAVE A MIND THAT CAN REASON.
Requiring gun registration with a psych test would help
Really? Is there no logic in the thinking of our elected officials, or is there? The 2nd Amendment was not writen to protect us from each other. It was written so that we would be able to protect us from an oppesssive Government, the very people who are now trying to pass laws that will allow them to take away our guns and thereby taking away our ability to control them. Who’s kidding who here.
“… how can we fix that?”
WE CAN NOT FIX IT, because we can’t fix human nature. There will always be some madmen in our midst that we can’t stop from doing the unthinkable. That is just the way the real world is.
The sooner we accept and acknowledge this uncomfortable truth, the sooner we can move on to addressing other, more important issues, like maybe the several thousands who are killed every year in gang violence.
Mental illness. we did not have this problem back before they shut down mental institutions.
