Purdue Student Killed by Roommate

Wednesday morning Varun Manish Chheda, a 20-year-old Purdue University student studying in the College of Science, was found dead in his dorm room in McCutcheon Hall. His roommate, 22-year-old Ji Min Sha called 911 at 12:44 a.m which alerted police to the murder on Purdue’s Campus. Sha, who was a student at Purdue’s Polytechnic Institute, was arrested as a suspect accused of the crime sometime on Wednesday after calling 911 and has yet to provide police with a motive.

Carrie Costello’s, the Coroner, autopsy findings show that Chheda was killed from “multiple sharp force traumatic injuries” and identified the manner of death to be homicide. However, the final results from autopsy are pending due to a toxicology report that is still processing.

Purdue’s President has come out assuring the safety of Purdue’s 60,000+ population, while many students are understandably shaken by the event. Many who live in McCutcheon Hall are still in disbelief that the murder happened right where they live.

It is unclear for now why Sha killed Chheda, and when he was question by reports before being taken into jail he only commented by saying “I love my family”. Purdue’s Chief of Police has said that this was a “unprovoked and senseless” crime and Chheda’s hometown community overall has come out to comment on the murder to say they are all saddened by the news.
