Trevor Noah Announces He’s Leaving The Daily Show

The Comedy Central weeknights show, The Daily Show, is losing another host. Trevor Noah announces he’ll be leaving the show, which comes as a shock to his handful of fans.

Noah joined The Daily Show 7 years ago after the departure of Jon Stewart. Stewart’s long-term success, hilarious feuding with Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly, and the ability to separate comedy from serious matters made Jon Stewart a classic late-night show host. Trevor Noah never found the same stride that Jon Stewart did during his run with The Daily Show

The audience exploded in applause and cheers then, and after a long pause, Noah continued. “I remember when we first started … so many people didn’t believe in us, it was a crazy bet to make, I mean, I still think it was a crazy choice … what a journey it’s been.”

“I just found myself filled with gratitude for the journey,” Noah added, listing off a number of events that had come about during his time behind the desk.

“I realized that after the seven years, my time is up,” Noah said then, prompting several audible gasps from the audience. “Yeah, but in the most beautiful way, honestly. I’ve loved hosting this show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges, it’s been one of my greatest joys, I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly s***y on the worst days. You know, we’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together.”

Trevor Noah’s decision to leave The Daily Show could be due to multiple reasons. Noah has stated that he has a desire to pursue his standup comedy career more. One other reason may be the shows declining ratings, which have gone down every year since 2017, and Noah has served as the host since late 2015.

However, The Daily Show’s ratings have been on the decline in the last few years. In May 2021, an average of nearly 500 million viewers tuned in to watch the show, while this number dropped to 363,000 viewers in September of the same year.

In May 2022, The Daily Show brought in around 200,000 viewers per episode.

Trevor Noah wasn’t the beloved host Jon Stewart was on The Daily Show, and Noah is being over-shadowed by other late-night acts. John Oliver, and Steven Colbert (two other former team members of Jon Stewart) have managed to find success on other late-night shows, and we’ll see if Noah is destined for the same path.
