In the event you find yourself in a bomb shelter during a nuclear explosion with people outside your household, the United States federal government advises that you wear a mask and socially distance yourself if possible. The advice has been on the website Ready.gov since November 11, 2020, after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but was highlighted Monday morning by several high-profile Twitter accounts who mocked the suggestion, implying that fall out from nuclear war would be more pressing than any threat of COVID-19.

On Monday, some Twitter accounts flagged the instructions under the “Get Inside” and “Stay Inside” sections of the Ready.gov page regarding nuclear explosions (emphasis added):

GET INSIDE
Get inside the nearest building to avoid radiation. Brick or concrete are best.

Remove contaminated clothing and wipe off or wash unprotected skin if you were outside after the fallout arrived. Hand sanitizer does not protect against fall out. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, if possible. Do not use disinfectant wipes on your skin.
