China has been hammered by both the US and Japan over its use of ‘Anal Swab” testing for Covid-19.
The United States State Department came out and has asked the leadership in Beijing to put a stop to this testing.
From NBC News:
U.S. diplomats in China were subjected to anal swab tests for Covid-19, a Department of State spokesperson confirmed Thursday, adding that a protest had been lodged with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The United States had received assurances from China that the tests were done in error and that diplomatic personnel were exempt from this specific testing requirement, the spokesperson said.
Now Japan’s Chief cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato has come out in protest of the testing.
According to Kato the testing “has not been confirmed anywhere else in the world” and has decried the testing as a violation of human rights and dignity.
The issue with using these “Anal Swab” tests is that it is not only invasive and inconvenient, but it might not even be a credible test method for Covid-19. According to Yang Zhanqiu, a pathologist at Wuhan University, the virus is contracted through the respiratory system and not the digestive system so Nasal and throat swabs are still the most effective method of testing.
