Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Progressive Democrats are holding the Biden Administrations COVID-19 relief package hostage, they will be blockading the bill until an increase for minimum wage is added as part of the legislation.
From The Daily Wire:
Speaking to a reporter from Politico Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez said that she and other progressives would abandon support for the $1.8 trillion aid package, that funds federal supplemental unemployment and extends an additional, individual relief check to most American taxpayers if the Biden administration decides it cannot pass the bill through “reconciliation” with the $15 minimum wage attached.
“There’s a scenario, where if our party is voluntarily trying to strip this provision, where we take a stand against it,” she said.
“It’s a small technicality, but I do think we’ve got to use every tool in our toolbox here. Whether it is reconciliation, whether it is, you know, ultimately reforming the filibuster. We’re going to need to deliver on our promise to raise the wage for 27 million Americans,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) added in an interview with MSNBC.
With the more moderate Democrats trying to skip this provision of the bill we are able to take a look into what Washington really cares about, votes. Most Democrats do not want to face the consequences of passing this but want the benefit of ‘supporting it’.
Another thing Americans get to see with this display is the way Washington crams things into these large bills. Why is a legislation on minimum wage being involved with Covid-19 relief? What else is in this monster of a bill?
As for the particular aspect of the bill, an increase to a $15 minimum wage has been long touted as a plan by the Democrats but now that they talk is done and its time to do what they said they were gonna do they have their eyes drawn to the floor and they sit idle. Most Democrats do no want to pass this legislation, all the data clearly points to its major issues and they do not want to face the consequences. What are the issues with a $15 minimum wage?
Unemployment for those making minimum wage currently would drastically increase. The fact of the matter is that some business can not afford to pay employees $15 an hour, there are many large corporations that could certainly pay more than $15 an hour. Those employees that work for large corporations would be making more but those who work for small business would have hours cut and many would simply be left unemployed.
This issue ultimately boils down to small business and big business. Mega corporations like McDonalds and Walmart that have massive profit margins do not care in the slightest about the increase in costs they will incur by a Minimum wage hike. Mom and pop shops, the local restaurants, and small corner stores operate on very thin profit margins and would have very grim outlook as a result of a minimum wage hike. These business’ would have to increase prices or cut jobs in order to stay afloat, these new prices would affect the middle class and the cut jobs would push more unemployment.
