California was rocked by an unprecedented series of 10 earthquakes on Sunday, all of which occurred in a single 24-hour period.
As The Sacramento Bee reports:
Petrolia is a coastal town about 270 miles northwest of Sacramento.
Experts say the epicenter of the 5.8-magnitude quake was 1.3 miles beneath a part of the Pacificwhere multiple tectonic plates scrape against each other, according to a report by the Berkeley Seismology Lab.
The other nine quakes ranged in depth from a half mile to nearly six miles from the surface, the USGS said.
Petrolia was also the epicenter of one of the most damaging quakes in California’s history, the 1992 event that injured over 350 people.
Only time will tell if this is just a taste of things to come.
