Iran’s Novel Coronavirus Containment Effort Fails

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Tuesday that “Iran may have concealed vital details about its outbreak” and called on all nations to tell the truth about the coronavirus.

Iran reported only 95 infections, but the admitted 15 deaths (widely believed to be more) which indicate that at least, hundreds of infection cases were concealed by the Iranian government and religious authorities.

Today, Iran reported that its top coronavirus official, Deputy Minister of Health Iraj Harirchi was diagnosed as infected with the coronavirus.  The Deputy Minister appeared visibly ill throughout a prior news conference where he denied a coronavirus cover-up by the Iranian government.

Iran has failed to impose quarantines in infected areas.  Iran reports having run out of face masks and testing kits.

Bizarrely, Iran failed to shut down the shrines that draw millions of pilgrims to infected cities of Qom and Mashhad, virtually guaranteeing worldwide exposure to the COVID-19 virus.  Many of these religious pilgrims come from countries least equipped to resist the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Afghanistan and Armenia announced that they were closing their borders to Iran as Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched on a rant that concerns about the coronavirus were meant to undermine his regime.
